Confederations Cup 2017: Hosts Russia get off to winning start

In the first match of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, hosts Russia got off to just the start they would have wanted, by beating New Zealand 2-0 in Saint Petersburg.

Russia took the lead in the 31st minute thanks to an own goal by New Zealand defender Michael Boxall. They then doubled the lead in the 69th minute thanks to striker Fedor Smolov, to ensure that their Confederations Cup adventure got off to a winning start, with just under a year left till the World Cup which will be taking place in Russia.

Next match of the tournament involves the remaining two teams in the group: Portugal and Mexico with a 17:00 CEST kick-off.
