Lewis Hamilton claimed pole position in the Malaysian Grand Prix ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, beating him by less than a tenth of a second to pole, with birthday boy Max Verstappen qualifying in third. Meanwhile, Sebastian Vettel will be starting at the back of the grid after an engine issue meant that he did not set a time in Q1, as his engine broke down as soon as he went out on track during the first part of qualifying. Debutant Pierre Gasly, meanwhile, qualified in 15th.
