Sebastian Vettel has won the 2018 British Grand Prix in what was an entertaining race. Home boy Lewis Hamilton eventually came home in second place after an impressive recovery drive, whilst Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen completed the podium in third place, with fellow Finn Valtteri Bottas finishing in fourth. At the start, polesitter Hamilton got away poorly and lost the lead to Sebastian Vettel. To make matters worse, he ended up in a collision with Raikkonen which meant he dropped to the back of the field. Raikkonen was deemed to be at fault for the incident and was penalised with a 10-second time penalty to serve with his pitstop. At this point, the order was: Vettel, Bottas, Verstappen, Raikkonen and Ricciardo with Hamilton down in 18th place. Hamilton quickly began to recover, and by lap 9 he was already back up into eighth place, and come lap 12 he was back up in sixth place. On lap 14, Raikkonen was first of the frontrunners to pit while serving his 10-second time penalty. Max Verstappen of Red Bull pitted himself on lap 18 and re-emerged ahead of Raikkonen, whilst fellow Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo pitted a lap later and did crucially re-emerge ahead of Raikkonen. On lap 20, Charles Leclerc of Sauber pitted, but retired as soon as he exited the pits in mysterious circumstaces, though it could well be that there was an error in the pitstop which may have resulted in an unsafe release. Vettel pitted from the lead on lap 21 and re-emerged ahead of Hamilton in second place, whilst Bottas pitted a lap later and exited from the pits behind Hamilton, but soon got back past him, and it is likely that team orders were used given Hamilton was yet to stop. Hamilton himself pitted on lap 25. At this point, the order was: Vettel, Bottas, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Raikkonen and Hamilton. Interestingly, on lap 31 Ricciardo pitted again for a set of soft tyres. Soon after, Sauber's Marcus Ericsson had a big crash going into turn 1 after losing control of his car. The Safety Car (SC) was deployed as a result, which ended up compromising Ricciardo's strategy as both Verstappen and Raikkonen were able to pit and re-emerge ahead of the Aussie. Vettel himself pitted from the lead during the SC period, but Mercedes drivers Bottas and Hamilton elected to stay out. At this point, the order was: Bottas, Vettel, Hamilton, Verstappen, Raikkonen and Ricciardo. The SC came in at the end of lap 38, and Bottas got a great restart and led, but further behind Verstappen and Raikkonen were in a great battle themselves, with Verstappen holding position. It was not long before the SC was deployed once again, as Carlos Sainz and Romain Grosjean were involved in a collision which is being investigated after the race. The SC came in again at the end of lap 42, and Bottas yet again got a great restart to keep his lead at the front. Bottas tried to defend his lead and fought very hard, but in the end Vettel got past him. Raikkonen did get past Verstappen, who eventually retired with what was seemingly a brakes issue. Bottas was also passed by Hamilton and Raikkonen, but upfront there was just no stopping Vettel who took his second ever British Grand Prix win.
