British motorsport driver George Russell, who will be making his Formula 1 debut for the Williams team in 2019 as reported earlier on Zarb times, has been crowned the 2018 FIA Formula 2 World Champion after winning the first of 2 races held in Abu Dhabi.
In Formula 2, during a race weekend there are 2 races (one of which is known as the feature race, and the other one is called the sprint race) at a venue where on the same weekend, there would be the Formula 1 Grand Prix. This season, there have been a total of 12 Grand Prix.
Russell, 20, has had an impressive junior career, winning the British Formula 4 Championship in 2014. He finished 3rd in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in 2016, and more notably won the 2017 GP3 Series, before going on to become Formula 2 champion this year. This season he has claimed 6 race victories, winning the sprint races in Azerbaijan, Monza (Italy) and Sochi (Russia), whilst he won the feature races held in Barcelona, France and Abu Dhabi. He finished on the podium a further 4 times, finishing second in both races held in Great Britain, whilst also finishing second in the sprint race in Austria and third in the feature race held in Belgium. In addition, Russell also claimed started 5 of the feature races from pole position, namely France, Austria, Great Britain, Monza (Italy) and Abu Dhabi.
We at Zarb times would like to congratulate George Russell on becoming the champion and look forward to following him more closely in Formula 1 in 2019!
