Valtteri Bottas has taken pole position for the 2019 Chinese Grand Prix, making it the third different driver to take a pole position this season in the opening 3 races. Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton qualified in second place, just 0.023s slower to make it a Mercedes 1-2 in the process. Sebastian Vettel qualified in third for Ferrari, with team-mate Charles Leclerc qualifying in fourth.
Alexander Albon did not set a time in qualifying due to a heavy accident he suffered in FP3, whilst Antonio Giovinazzi did not set a time either, even though he did emerge during Q1. Also, Red Bull's Pierre Gasly advanced to Q3 for the first time this season, whilst Kimi Raikkonen did not advance to Q3 for the first time since the 2016 Hungarian Grand Prix.
