Sebastian Vettel has secured pole position for the 2019 Canadian Grand Prix, his first pole position since the 2018 German Grand Prix and his second consecutive pole in Canada. Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton qualified in second place, whilst Ferrari's Charles Leclerc qualified third though is under investigation for leaving the track and not rejoining correctly. Impressively, Renault's Daniel Ricciardo managed to qualify in fourth place for Renault, ahead of the Red Bull of Pierre Gasly and the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen failed to make it into the final part of qualifying, as the team put him out on medium tyres at the start of Q2 and he had not set a time fast enough to make it into the final part of qualifying, and switched onto the soft tyres though whilst on his final run his lap was compromised by Kevin Magnussen (who did advance to the final part of qualifying) who crashed at the Wall of Champions, for whom it remains to be seen whether he will have to take a grid penalty for a gearbox change. In addition, Carlos Sainz, who qualified 9th for McLaren, is under investigation for having impeded Toro Rosso's Alexander Albon.
