In the first game played, Eintracht Frankfurt, who last season reached the UEFA Europa League semi-final before losing to Chelsea in an eventual penalty shoot-out, began their season with a narrow 1-0 win over Hoffenheim, now under the management of Alfred Schreuder after Julian Nagelsmann left to join RB Leipzig - thanks to an opening minute goal from Austrian defender Martin Hinteregger. In the second game of the day, Union Berlin, having won a promotion play-off at the end of last season against VfB Stuttgart, made their Bundesliga debut at home to RB Leipzig, now under the management of Nagelsmann. Despite a very good atmosphere in the ground, it is fair to say that Union Berlin's Bundesliga debut did not quite go to plan, as they suffered a humbling 4-0 defeat after goals from Marcel Halstenberg via a Marcel Sabitzer assist, before Halstenberg returned the favour for the second goal which was finished by Sabitzer. Timo Werner, subject to speculation about his future during the summer, scored Leipzig's third goal before Christopher Nkunku, signed from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, wrapped up the scoring for the away side who lie in second place in the table after the opening weekend of the season.
