Round-up:
The Champions League 2019/20 group stage got underway with four out of the eight groups in action, and tonight it was the other four groups who played. The standout fixture of the night arguably came in Paris, as Paris Saint-Germain hosted 13-time European champions Real Madrid, and it was the Parisians who ultimately came out on top in a resounding 3-0 victory as former Real Madrid man Angel Di Maria grabbed a brace, whilst current Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale saw a goal disallowed after he handled the ball in the build-up, which would have halved the deficit just before the half-time. The win for PSG was then wrapped up in the 91st minute by Belgian Thomas Meunier. The other match in this group, Group A, saw Club Brugge and Galatasaray play out a goalless draw.
Another standout fixture took place in Group D, as Juventus took on Atlético Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano, home of last season's Champions League final. After a goalless first half, Juventus raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to a wonderful goal by Juan Cuadrado which was followed up by a Blaise Matuidi strike. This did not dishearten the hosts, however, as they got back into game with a goal from Stefan Savic with 20 minutes left, and in the 90th minute Hector Herrera scored from a corner kick to complete the comeback. The other match in this group saw arguably a surprise result, as Lokomotiv Moscow recorded a very impressive 2-1 victory away to German side Bayer Leverkusen thanks to goals from Gregorz Krychowiak and Dmitri Barinov, which were sandwiched by a Benedikt Howedes own goal.
There were two English sides in action tonight, as Tottenham Hotspur travelled to Greece to face Olympiacos. Tottenham went into a 2-goal lead thanks to a Harry Kane penalty which was followed by a Lucas Moura strike. Olympiacos' Daniel Podence halved the deficit just before half-time, and then 10 minutes into the second half the Greek champions levelled the scoring thanks to a Mathieu Valbuena penalty. Meanwhile, in the same group German champions Bayern Munich recorded a handsome 3-0 win over Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade thanks to goals from Kingsley Coman, Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller.
There was one team who tonight made their Champions League group stage debut, as Italian side Atalanta were handed a very tough lesson by Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb, with the Italians suffering a nasty 4-0 defeat as Mislav Orsic bagged a hat-trick after Marin Leovac had put the Croats in front. English champions Manchester City kicked off their European campaign in impressive fashion as they recorded a comfortable 3-0 win away to Shakhtar Donetsk thanks to goals from Riyad Mahrez, Ilkay Gundogan and Gabriel Jesus.
