Round-up:
The Championship saw its second round of midweek action, with the key match arguably coming in Yorkshire, as Leeds United bounced back from their weekend defeat away to Charlton Athletic by recording a slender 1-0 win at home to West Bromwich Albion thanks to a goal from Ezgjan Alioski, which consequently brought to an end West Brom's unbeaten start to the season. Nottingham Forest, flying high in the top 6, failed to take advantage as they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Blackburn Rovers as Joe Lolley cancelled out Adam Armstrong's earlier goal which had given Blackburn the lead just two minutes earlier. Preston North End were another team close to the top who failed to take full advantage of West Brom's defeat, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Middlesbrough. Preston took the lead in the 40th minute through Josh Harrop, however, it barely lasted two minutes as an own goal by Darnell Fisher handed Middlesbrough an equaliser and it ensured that both sides took a share of the spoils. Hull City extended their unbeaten league run to four games as they inflicted a first league defeat of Garry Monk's reign as manager of Sheffield Wednesday, with a goal from striker Tom Eaves proving sufficient to give Hull City the victory. Wigan Athletic earned their third league triumph of the season in a slender 1-0 win over Birmingham City thanks to Anthony Pilkington's 76th minute strike which was poorly dealt with by goalkeeper Lee Camp. Fulham moved into the promotion play-off places as they recorded an extremely comfortable 4-1 win over 10-man Reading thanks to a brace from Tom Cairney and a brace from Aleksandar Mitrovic, with Yakou Meite grabbing a scant consolation for Reading in the 89th minute. Finally, in the last of the matches which took place on Tuesday, Huddersfield Town finally claimed their first league win of the season, and the first under new manager Danny Cowley, as they won 1-0 away to bottom side Stoke City thanks to an 82nd minute goal from Juninho Bacuna, in a result which undoubtedly increases the pressure on Stoke boss Nathan Jones.
The standout match which took place on Wednesday night saw two of the early high-flying sides, Charlton Athletic and Swansea City go head-to-head. Charlton took the lead inside the opening two minutes from Jonathan Leko, before Swansea levelled up the scoring in the 17th minute thanks to Yan Dhanda. Andre Ayew then bagged his first league goal of the season in the 65th minute to put Swansea ahead, and the Welsh side held on for a deserved 2-1 win in a result which has put them top of the table thanks to their first win since the last day of August. Cardiff City extended their unbeaten run in the Championship to four successive matches as they inflicted a second successive defeat on Queens Park Rangers who dominated possession and hit the post twice. It only required 11 minutes for Cardiff to take the lead and they did so thanks to a goal from Sean Morrison, before they doubled the lead right on the stroke of half-time thanks to Marlon Pack, before they then sealed the win 18 minutes from time thanks to substitute Callum Paterson. Bristol City remain unbeaten since the opening day of the season as they required an 87th minute equaliser to salvage a point away at Brentford, who had taken the lead in the 64th minute thanks to a goal from Josh Dasilva. Barnsley needed a 94th minute goal from Conor Chaplin themselves to rescue a point at home to Derby County. Barnsley went in the lead in the 13th minute thanks to a goal from Aapo Halme, however, Derby came from behind to lead by half-time thanks to a goal from Chris Martin which was followed by a penalty from Tom Huddlestone. The drama did not end there, however, as Chaplin scored a 94th minute equaliser to ensure the sides took a share of the spoils. Finally, Luton Town and Millwall also played out a draw, with Luton scoring in the 86th minute thanks to Callum McManaman to cancel out Tom Bradshaw's 60th minute strike which had put Millwall in front.
