Derby were awarded a penalty very early on, their third of the season, and, after having missed his first penalty against Swansea, Martyn Waghorn scored his second consecutive penalty which gave the home side the lead. Derby were then controversially awarded another penalty just before the end of the first half, but this time Martyn Waghorn saw his penalty saved, the second one this season that he has failed to convert. Then late on in the second half, West Brom were awarded a penalty of their own, and striker Kenneth Zohore made no mistake in converting it which maintained their unbeaten start to the season. There was also drama on the touchline, as West Brom manager Slaven Bilic was booked twice for protesting, which meant that he got sent to the stands late on in the match.
The team at the top of the table took on the team bottom of it, as Leeds United travelled to Stoke City, with the table-toppers coming out on top, as Leeds won 3-0 away to Stoke, for whom it has been a truly disastrous start to the season, claiming just one point from the opening five matches. In contrast, Leeds have won all but one of their five matches played so far this season. It has been a very good start to the season for promoted Charlton Athletic, and they have continued their unbeaten run, this time winning 1-0 at home to Brentford thanks to a goal from Conor Gallagher. After making a poor initial start, Bristol City have won three games on the bounce, as they beat Hull City 3-1 away from home thanks to a Benik Afobe brace, with one of the goals coming from the penalty spot, and an own goal from Reece Burke after Jarrod Bowen had levelled the scoring. After they hammerd Millwall last Wednesday, it was back down to earth with a bump for Fulham, as they suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest after a Lewis Grabban brace, who themselves have not lost since the opening day of the season. Preston North End made it back-to-back wins after they won 2-1 at home to Sheffield Wednesday, after two penalties from Daniel Johnson, with Steven Fletcher grabbing a consolation for the away side. Millwall bounced back from their hammering last Wednesday away to Fulham with a creditable 1-1 draw away to Middlesbrough, after Tom Bradshaw cancelled out Paddy McNair's earlier strike. Luton Town have finally earned their first win back in the Championship, as they beat fellow promoted side Barnsley 3-1 away from home thanks to goals from Jacob Butterfield, James Collins and Harry Cornick, before Mallik Wilks scored a mere consolation for the hosts. It has been a disastrous start to life back in the Championship for managerless Huddersfield Town, who have seemingly forgotten how to win and suffered a defeat once again, this time going down 2-0 at home to Reading after goals from Ovie Ejaria and Michael Morrison, whilst Blackburn Rovers and Cardiff City played out a goalless draw. In the one match which took place on Sunday, Swansea City extended their impressive start to the season, as they in the end comfortably beat Birmingham City 3-0 in a dominant performance by the Swans. After a goalless first half, Kyle Naughton stepped off the bench and gave them the lead with a brilliant shot outside the penalty area. Five minutes later Bersant Celina scored another brilliant goal, before Swansea were then awarded a penalty 6 minutes after which Borja Baston converted.
