Round-up: The Championship's weekend action began with an early kick-off on Saturday, as Sheffield Wednesday hosted Leeds United in a Yorkshire derby. The two sides ultimately played out a goalless draw, although both teams hit the post via Steven Fletcher and Ezgjan Alioski for Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds respectively. There was another Yorkshire derby which took place on Saturday, as Huddersfield Town moved out of the relegation zone thanks to a 2-1 triumph at home to struggling Barnsley, in a result which leaves the away side bottom of the table. Christopher Schindler opened the scoring for the hosts in the 30th minute, before they doubled the lead 8 minutes after half-time. Jacob Brown did half the deficit for Barnsley, however, it proved to be a scant consolation as the hosts held on for the victory which extended their unbeaten league run under Danny Cowley to six games. Another derby which took place today came in the North West, as Preston North End came from two goals down to win 3-2 at home to Blackburn Rovers. The scoring here was opened after less than a minute, as Sam Gallagher's header inadvertently hit the head of Preston goalkeeper Declan Rudd for an own goal, before the lead was then doubled ten minutes later thanks to a goal from Gallagher himself. The deficit was halved just eight minutes into the second half thanks to a goal from midfielder Tom Barkhuizen, before Marvin Johnson levelled the scoring via the penalty spot. Barkhuizen then bagged his second goal eight minutes from time which proved to be the winning goal of the match. Current league leaders West Bromwich Albion were denied victory at home to Charlton Athletic thanks to a 94th minute penalty in a 2-2 draw. Matt Phillips gave the hosts the lead after only 10 minutes, and despite having several chances to double the lead, they failed to do so before Charlton equalised thanks to a goal from in-form Macauley Bonne. West Brom were then reduced to 10 men as Nathan Ferguson was sent off for a reckless challenge, although the referee initially sent off Grady Diangana by mistake until he ultimately sent off the correct player. Despite going down to 10 men, it was the hosts who went back in front, thanks to a goal from Hal Robson-Kanu, although it probably should not have stood as he handled the ball in the build-up to the goal. It seemed as though the hosts would hold on for the victory depsite being reduced to 10 men, however, Charlton were awarded a penalty in the 94th minute which Josh Cullen converted to ensure the sides had to take a share of the spoils. Gary Rowett could hardly have wished for a better outcome in his first league match in charge of Millwall, as they recorded a 2-0 win at home to Stoke City thanks to goals from Ben Thompson and Jed Wallace from the penalty spot. Hull City recorded back-to-back victories against East Midlands opposition, as they won 2-0 at home to Derby County thanks to a second half brace from Jarrod Bowen. Birmingham City continued their impressive home form this season, as they recorded a slender 2-1 victory at home to Luton Town thanks to goals from Kristian Pedersen and Lukas Jutkiewicz, which were sandwiched by a strike from substitute Harry Cornick. Meanwhile, despite being reduced to 10 men as goalkeeper Marek Rodak was sent off for handling the ball outside the penalty area, Fulham held on for a point in a goalless draw away at struggling Middlesbrough, who slipped into the relegation zone as a result. Due to adverse weather, Nottingham Forest's clash at home to Reading was postponed.
The action on Sunday began with yet another derby, this time in South Wales, as Swansea City hosted Cardiff City for the first time since February 2014. In the end, it was the hosts who prevailed thanks to a 24th minute Ben Wilmot goal, and although they had several chances to kill off the game, one goal proved to be sufficient to secure the victory. Meanwhile, in the other match, Bristol City required an 86th minute goal to salvage a point at home to Wigan Athletic, who had come from behind to lead 2-1. Andreas Weimann gave the home side the lead in the 39th minute, before that was cancelled out only 5 minutes later through Chey Dunkley. Dunkley then bagged his second goal of the match eight minutes into the second half, before Pedro Pereira's 86th minute goal denied Wigan their first away win and rescued a point for the hosts. The action finally concluded with a Monday night match, as Brentford recorded their third consecutive league victory away to Queens Park Rangers. The away side took the lead in the 23rd minute thanks to a goal from striker Ollie Watkins, before their lead was cancelled out 3 minutes after half-time via a header from captain Grant Hall. Brentford were then awarded a contentious penalty as Josh Scowen was deemed to have brought down Bryan Mbeumo inside the 18-yard box, and Said Benrahma ruthlessly converted the resulting spot kick to put Brentford back in front. Watkins then bagged his second goal of the game in the 94th minute to seal an impressive victory for the away side, one which leaves them 12th in the table.
