Round-up:
The Championship action resumed following the international break with a Friday night, as Cardiff City hosted Sheffield Wednesday in a match where ultimately neither side could be separated. Sheffield Wednesday took the lead after 19 minutes thanks to a header from defender Julian Boerner, which seemed to be sufficient to give them the three points. However, Lee Tomlin stepped up in the 87th minute to score from a free kick which salvaged a point for Cardiff and maintained their unbeaten home run this season.
The action on Saturday began with Blackburn Rovers hosting Huddersfield Town in a match where neither side could be separated. All it required was 13 minutes for the scoring to be opened, as Huddersfield Town went in front thanks to a penalty from key striker Karlan Grant. A mistake from defender Tommy Elphick, however, enabled Blackburn to equalise and they did so thanks to former Tottenham Hotspur attacking midfielder Lewis Holtby after an assist from Bradley Dack. The roles were then reversed as Holtby assisted Dack to give Blackburn a 2-1 lead just over 10 minutes before half-time. However, Blackburn were unable to hold on for the victory as Juninho Bacuna equalised for Huddersfield in the 63rd minute to extend their unbeaten run in the league to four successive matches, however, they have slipped back into the relegation zone due to other results going against them.
The main result which ensured that Huddersfield slipped into the relegation zone was that Reading, who appointed former sporting director Mark Bowen as their new manager earlier this week, recorded a dramatic 1-0 triumph over Preston North End thanks to a Matt Miazga goal deep into second half injury time. Another team who sacked their manager during the the international break, Barnsley, recorded a 1-1 draw at home to high-flying Swansea City after Alex Mowatt cancelled out Andre Ayew's goal 3 minutes earlier which had given Swansea the lead. However, Barnsley still slipped to the bottom of the table as Stoke City recorded back-to-back victories for the first time in 2019 as they won 2-0 at home to Fulham thanks to goals from Tyrese Campbell and Lee Gregory from the penalty spot. Meanwhile, at the other end of the table, West Bromwich Albion maintained their lead at the top as they recorded a slender 1-0 triumph away to Middlesbrough thanks to a goal from Hal Robson-Kanu in the final 10 minutes, despite a rather sub-par performance by the league leaders it must be said. On the 100th anniversary since they were founded as a club, Leeds United bounced back from their defeat away to Millwall a fortnight ago by recording a slender 1-0 victory at home to Birmingham City thanks to a goal from local boy and academy graduate Kalvin Phillips. Meanwhile, Bristol City fell to their first league defeat since the opening day of the season as they were well-beaten away at Luton Town, who earned their first clean sheet this season in a 3-0 win thanks to goals from Pelly Ruddock, Harry Cornick and an own goal from Ashley Williams. Queens Park Rangers moved into the promotion play-off places, as they came from behind to win 3-2 away to Hull City. Jarrod Bowen's 29th minute strike put Hull in front, before Ryan Manning equalised right before half-time. In the second half it then proved to be a case of being clinical from 12 yards, as QPR were awarded two penalties, which were both converted by Eberechi Eze, before Northern Ireland international Josh Magennis scored what proved to be a mere consolation goal for the hosts. Another London team who recorded a victory this weekend were Charlton Athletic, and they did so in resounding fashion too, winning 3-0 at home to Derby County thanks to goals from Macauley Bonne, Naby Sarr and Conor Gallagher. There was one more match played on Saturday, as Brentford hosted Millwall in a dramatic five-goal thriller. Brentford were the brighter team initially and they had a golden opportunity to take the lead, as they were awarded a penalty when Henrik Dalsgaard was fouled by Shaun Hutchinson in the penalty area, however, Ollie Watkins had the resulting spot kick saved by Millwall goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski. In addition to the disappointment of failing to convert a penalty, Brentford went behind against the run of play as Tom Bradshaw scored right on the stroke of half-time to give Millwall the lead. That lead was doubled ten minutes after half-time as Millwall were awarded a penalty of their own, which Jed Wallace. It seemed as though Millwall were going to take all three points, as, despite all their best efforts, it was one of those days for Brentford where whatever they tried, the ball just would not go into the net. All that changed, however, six minutes from time as Josh Dasilva halved the deficit, before Brentford managed to get the scoreline back level thanks to a goal from Bryan Mbeumo in the 88th minute. Watkins then made amends for his earlier failure from the penalty spot as he scored a 90th minute goal which ultimately gave Brentford the victory. The weekend's action came to a conclusion with one final match played today, as Wigan Athletic hosted Nottingham Forest. The hosts prevailed in a 1-0 victory thanks to a 35th minute goal from Jamal Lowe, which inflicted a first defeat on Nottingham Forest since the opening day of the season.
