Round-up: The Championship action continued with 5 fixtures being played across Wednesday and Thursday, starting in the North West, as Preston North End hosted Derby County in a key clash in the battle for the final promotion play-off spot. In the end, it was Derby who prevailed in a win which enabled them to close the gap to sixth placed Cardiff to one point thanks to a brilliant free kick from Wayne Rooney in the 18th minute. Meanwhile, in the battle against relegation, Huddersfield Town recorded an invaluable win which enabled them to get out of the relegation zone, as they triumphed 3-0 away to Birmingham City. Karlan Grant gave Huddersfield the lead from the penalty spot inside 10 minutes, before Huddersfield were awarded another penalty in the second half, though this time Grant saw his penalty saved. However, not long after, Huddersfield doubled their lead thanks to Fraizer Campbell, before Elias Kachunga wrapped up the win in the 72nd minute. Nottingham Forest strengthened their prospects of making the promotion play-offs at the end of the season, as they recorded a slender 1-0 win thanks to a second half goal from Tiago Silva at home to Bristol City, who had defender Ashley Williams sent off 12 minutes from time. West Bromwich Albion took full advantage of Leeds' draw on Tuesday at home to Luton, as they closed the gap to spot down to one point thanks to a 3-0 win away at Sheffield Wednesday. Charlie Austin gave them the lead in the 37th minute via the penalty spot, before a second half brace from Matheus Pereira enabled them to maintain a 5-point gap to third placed Brentford. Finally, the action concluded with a significant clash in the battle to avoid relegation, as Hull City hosted fellow strugglers Middlesbrough. Middlesbrough made the perfect start to this clash as Britt Assombalonga scored from the penalty spot after only 4 minutes. However, that lead lasted only 4 minutes, as Hull City equalised thanks to Herbie Kane. It seemed as though the sides were going to have to settle for a point, before Mallik Wilks scored a vital goal for Hull City in the 90th minute which will undoubtedly be a huge boost for them in their bid to avoid relegation.
