Round-up:
The EFL League 1 season kicked-off this weekend and contained plenty of goals, disappointments and positives. The sides who were relegated from the Championship last season had a fairly positive start. Ipswich Town, who finished bottom of the Championship, began their first season in League 1 since 1957 with a 1-0 win over Burton Albion, who ended up reduced to 10 men, thanks to a goal from Luke Garbutt. Fellow relegated side Rotherham United also began their season with a victory, as they beat AFC Wimbledon 2-1 away from home thanks to goals from Freddie Ladapo and Clark Robertson sandwiched by a goal from AFC Wimbledon's Joe Pigott. It was not such a good start for the other relegated side Bolton Wanderers, who endured a very difficult off-season as players had not been paid for a long time and they find themselves still in administration with a takeover seemingly near completion, whilst they are also starting the season on -12 points and only today managed to officially complete a few player signings. They did at least, however, put in a spirited performance, however, it was not quite enough as they ultimately suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Wycombe Wanderers.
It was a mixed bag of results for the promoted teams. Two of the promoted teams, Bury and MK Dons, were meant to face off however the game did not go ahead as Bury find themselves in severe financial difficulties and have so far been unable to present sufficient information to demonstrate that they can complete the season. League 2 champions Lincoln City, however, got off to a perfect start as they beat Accrington Stanley 2-0 thanks to goals from Michael O'Connor and John Akinde from the penalty spot. On the other hand, Tranmere Rovers, promoted via the play-offs, did not get off to such a good start as they suffered a defeat at the hands of Rochdale, however, they did produce a fairly spirited comeback as they scored two goals towards the end of the match in a 3-2 defeat, which saw Tranmere reduced to 10 men as Rushian Hepburn-Murphy saw red.
For the teams who last season competed in the League 1 play-offs without success, it was not such a great start, as Sunderland and Doncaster Rovers both were held to 1-1 draws against Oxford United and Gillingham respectively. As for the other team who unsuccessfully competed in last season's play-offs, Portsmouth, their season began with a 1-0 defeat away to Shrewsbury Town.
Blackpool began their first league game under new owner Simon Sadler in impressive fashion, as they beat Bristol Rovers thanks to a Jay Spearing penalty and a goal from Armand Gnanduillet right on the restart of the second-half. Coventry City began their second spell playing away from their original home, the Ricoh Arena, in ideal fashion as they beat Southend United 1-0 at the St Andrew's Stadium (the venue where Coventry will be playing their home games this season). Peterborough United, fancied by many to do well this season, began their season in disappointing fashion, losing 3-1 at home to Fleetwood Town, who head the League 1 table after the opening round of fixtures.
