Manchester City have moved to sign Joao Cancelo from Juventus, with Danilo moving as part of a swap the deal in the other direction.

Manchester City have officially completed the signing of right-back Joao Cancelo from Juventus, with Brazilian Danilo heading in the opposite direction. It is understood that Manchester City will pay a reported net transfer fee of £26.1m for the Portuguese full-back. A club statement confirming the signing of Cancelo read: "Manchester City have completed the signing of Joao Cancelo from Juventus.

The Portuguese defender has penned a deal which keeps him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2025 and follows Angelino and Rodri to become Pep Guardiola’s third signing of the summer.

“City are a fantastic club, with a brilliant manager and I am delighted to be here,” he said after agreeing personal terms and completing his medical.

“Everything about them has impressed me, from the facilities, to their style of play.

“I am always looking to develop my game and win trophies and I believe I can do that here, so now I’m really looking forward to the new season and testing myself in the Premier League.” Whilst in Turin, Cancelo established himself as one of Serie A’s best full-backs and City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, believes he can make a valuable contribution to the reigning Premier League champions.

“Joao is a fine player and an excellent attacking full-back who will provide us with a real threat on the right-hand side,” he said.

“We have been impressed with his progress and have no doubt he can continue to shine here in Manchester.

“He fits the profile of player we want here at Manchester City. His best years are ahead of him, he’s technically proficient and has the physical attributes we desire.

“I am delighted we have secured his signature.”

Comfortable on either flank and also capable of playing in a more advanced position, Cancelo provides great delivery from wide areas and boasts exceptional athleticism, using his pace to good effect in both offensive and defensive situations. His professional career began with Benfica, where he progressed through their academy and won the 2013 Portuguese U19 Championship alongside Bernardo Silva.

He made his senior debut the following season, when the Lisbon giants claimed a domestic treble, but joined Valencia on a year-long loan in 2014/15 and did enough in 13 games to convince Los Che to make the deal permanent.

He went on to play 77 times over the next two campaigns before heading off on loan again, this time to Inter Milan, where he thrived.

Cancelo’s form convinced Juventus to swoop for him last summer and he continued to impress in Turin, winning praise for his committed attacking play which yielded one goal and five assists in 34 games as Juve lifted an eighth successive Serie A title.

He followed that up with his first taste of international success, winning the inaugural UEFA Nations League title with Portugal this summer.

Everyone at Manchester City welcomes Joao to the Club and wishes him the best of luck throughout his time here." Whilst a club statement confirming Danilo's departure read: "Danilo has signed for Juventus on a permanent deal.

The Brazilian defender joined City in the summer of 2017 and played a key role in the unprecedented success that followed.

“It’s been a pleasure to be part of the success City have enjoyed in my time here,” he said.

“The Club have been fantastic with me from day one and I will always be grateful.

“The Premier League title wins will stay with me forever and I will always have City in my heart. The fans, the players and the staff have all been brilliant and I wish the Club every success in the future.”

His first season at the Club saw us become the first top-flight English side ever to reach 100 points, 19 ahead of second-placed Manchester United, the largest winning margin in Premier League history.

Danilo, operating in a variety of roles, played 38 times in all competitions, scoring three goals, as we won both the league and Carabao Cup.

And last season the 28-year-old played 22 times as we became the first men’s side in history to win every major English trophy available.

In total, Danilo played 60 times for City, winning two Premier League titles, two Carabao Cups and an FA Cup.

Everyone at City would like to wish Danilo the best on his move to Italy and thank him for his contribution over his two seasons in Manchester."
