Round-up:
In the first of two Sunday matches, it was newly-promoted Sheffield United who came out on top in a deserved 1-0 win over a very poor Crystal Palace side. The first half was relatively dull with few key chances, though the best chance of the half fell to Sheffield United's David McGoldrick, who should have scored from around 8 yards out, but the ball hit him above his foot and it ended up going easily into the hands of Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita. It did not take long for the Blades to find the breakthrough in the second half, however, as 2 minutes into the half, defender Jack O'Connell made an overlap, a key feature of Sheffield United's style of play, and it created an opportunity for midfielder Luke Freeman, who saw his shot parried by Guaita, and the rebound fell to John Lundstram who converted his shot into the roof of the net. Despite the fact that Crystal Palace had more of the ball, they only had 3 shots all game and rarely ever looked like equalising, and ultimately Sheffield United saw out the win fairly comfortably.
In the second game of the day, in what was Frank Lampard's first home game as Chelsea manager, his side were held to a 1-1 draw by Leicester City. Chelsea actually started off the game really well, and were rewarded for their start with a goal from academy graduate Mason Mount after a mistake by Wilfred Ndidi. The first half was a half dominated entirely by the Blues, but they could not take advantage and the score remained 1-0 at half-time. As the catchphrase goes, it truly was a game of two halves, as Leicester completely dominated the second half, and had several chances which they could and perhaps should have converted, before their goal came after a beautiful delivery from a corner by James Maddison, which was headed in by Wilfred Ndidi, who atoned for his error in Chelsea's goal. Maddison later had a brilliant chance which he should have converted to give Leicester the win, but blazed over the bar and ultimately both teams had to settle for a share of the spoils. In Monday night's game, Manchester United could not maintain their 100% start to the season, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Wolverhampton Wanderers. It was the Red Devils who took the lead of the game, as striker Anthony Martial finished off a brilliant pass by team-mate Marcus Rashford. After a first half in which arguably United were the better team, Wolves came out much stronger at the start of the second half, with Adama Traore, on for wing-back Matt Doherty who had a sickness bug, making a big impact and giving United a tougher test. Wolves were rewarded for their improvement in the second half with a sensational equaliser from Portuguese international midfielder Ruben Neves striking a shot into the top corner (via the post). Just under ten minutes later, United had a golden opportunity to retake the lead as they were awarded a penalty after a foul by Wolves captain Conor Coady on Paul Pogba, but after last week Marcus Rashford took a penalty for United against Chelsea, this time it was Pogba who stepped up, however, he saw his spot kick saved by Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio, and no team ultimately could find that decisive third goal of the game.
