Round-up: The Premier League action resumed following the international break with struggling Everton hosting West Ham United, who, it is fair to say have enjoyed a promising start to the season. However, it was the hosts who prevailed in a 2-0 triumph thanks to a goal from Bernard in the first half before Glyfi Sigurdsson's 90th minute strike wrapped up the victory in a result which has undoubtedly eased the pressure on their manager Marco Silva. The afternoon's action saw Chelsea record their third successive league victory as they recorded a 1-0 triumph at home to Newcastle United thanks to a Marcos Alonso goal, in a result which has led to Newcastle slipping back into the relegation zone. This is due to the fact that, in addition to Everton winning, Southampton recorded a 1-1 draw away to Wolverhampton Wanderers, who had two goals disallowed due to the intervention of the VAR. After Raul Jimenez had two goals in the first half disallowed for the hosts, it was the away side who took the lead thanks to striker Danny Ings' 53rd minute goal. Jimenez did eventually score a goal which stood, however, as he converted from the spot for Wolves after Matt Doherty was fouled in the penalty area, which ultimately extended the hosts' unbeaten run in the league to four successive matches. Leicester City maintained their place in the top 4 as they came from behind to beat Burnley 2-1 thanks to goals from Jamie Vardy and Youri Tielemans either side of half-time, after Chris Wood had put Burnley ahead in the 26th minute. Another team who came from behind to win were newly-promoted Aston Villa, as they recorded a 2-1 victory at home to Brighton & Hove Albion. Brighton took the lead after 21 minutes thanks to a header by Adam Webster from Pascal Gross' free-kick, which some felt should not have been awarded in the first place. The away side were arguably the dominant team for the majority of the first half and might well have extended their lead, however, the momentum of the game completely shifted once Aaron Mooy was needlessly sent off for Brighton as he was shown a second yellow card. Aston Villa then had the ball in the net in the 43rd minute thanks to midfielder Conor Hourihane, however, the goal was disallowed due to a foul in the build-up. That said, Aston Villa did score again before the conclusion of the first half as Jack Grealish converted a low cross from right-back Frederic Guilbert, and this time the goal stood. Although Aston Villa had a man advantage for the second half, it is fair to argue that they struggled to break down their visitors, and it seemed as though the sides would have to settle for a share of the spoils, until Matt Targett scored in the 94th minute to make it back-to-back wins for Aston Villa, the first time they have managed to do so in the Premier League since May 2015. Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur's dire run of form continued, as they were fortunate to earn a point at home to bottom side Watford, who remain without a league win this season, as Dele Alli's 86th minute goal cancelled out Abdoulaye Doucoure's sixth minute strike which had put Watford in front. Finally, in a match where it is fair to say goals were expected given both sides' defensive weaknesses, AFC Bournemouth and Norwich City played out a goalless draw in what is Norwich's first clean sheet of the campaign. The action concluded with an evening kick-off, as reigning champions Manchester City recorded a richly deserved 2-0 win away to Crystal Palace thanks to goals from Gabriel Jesus and David Silva to close the gap to league leaders Liverpool, who are in action tomorrow as they travel to face struggling Manchester United, to five points.
