Round-up:
The Premier League's weekend action began with a Friday night clash between the sides occupying the bottom two spots in the league table going into the weekend, as Norwich City hosted Watford. In a match where both sides essentially needed a victory to give their season a boost, it was the away side who triumphed thanks to a 2nd minute goal from Gerard Deulofeu followed by a goal from substitute Andre Gray in the 52nd minute. Despite being reduced to 10 men in the 65th minute as Christian Kabasele was sent off for two yellow cards, Watford held on to win 2-0 and thus earn their first league win of the season, which has also moved them off the foot of the table, at the expense of their opponents.
The action today, meanwhile, began with a London derby, as an in-form Chelsea hosted Crystal Palace in what was Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson's 300th Premier League game in charge. After a goalless first half in which the hosts lacked creativity and struggled to break down their resolute opponents, Tammy Abraham gave Chelsea the lead in the 52nd minute thanks to some lovely build-up play, although it must be noted that Crystal Palace should have defended the situation better. Palace did push forward somewhat more frequently in search of an equaliser, and James Tomkins missed a huge chance when he had a free header following a corner kick. Chelsea then wrapped up the win in the 79th minute thanks to a goal from in-form American Christian Pulisic, meaning Chelsea have recorded six league wins on the bounce.
The afternoon's action saw a huge clash down at the bottom, as Southampton hosted Everton who were just one place outside the relegation zone going into the day. In the end, it was Everton who triumphed in a 2-1 victory, which was their first away win of the season. After only four minutes, Everton took the lead thanks to a Tom Davies goal, before that was cancelled out by a 50th minute goal from Southampton's Danny Ings. Richarlison then put Everton back in front thanks to a 75th minute strike, which proved to be winning goal. As far as Everton are concerned, this is a result which has helped ease the pressure on manager Marco Silva whilst piling it on Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhüttl. Burnley earned their first win since the beginning of October, thanks to a 3-0 triumph at home to a currently out-of-form West Ham United side. First half goals from Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood gave Burnley a two-goal cushion, before the win was wrapped up in the second half thanks an own goal by West Ham goalkeeper Roberto. One team who moved up the table quite considerably were Newcastle United, as they registered back-to-back league victories for the first time this season, as they came from behind to win 2-1 at home to AFC Bournemouth thanks to goals either side of half-time from DeAndre Yedlin and Ciaran Clark, after Harry Wilson had put the away side in front. Sheffield United extended their unbeaten league run to five successive matches and continued their unbeaten away start to this year's campaign, thanks to a 1-1 draw away to a struggling Tottenham Hotspur. Son Heung-min, who had his red card rescinded for last week's tackle on Everton midfielder, gave Tottenham the lead in the 58th minute. Sheffield United then had the ball in the net only 2 minutes later thanks to David McGoldrick, however, the goal was disallowed by VAR as John Lundstram was extremely marginally offside. Despite that setback, Sheffield United kept on probing and pushing for that equaliser, and eventually they got their reward, as a mis-hit cross from George Baldock went all the way into the bottom corner and helped Sheffield United earn a well-deserved point.
The action today came to a conclusion with high-flying Leicester City hosting a struggling and so far underwhelming Arsenal side. Therefore, it is fair to argue that the outcome was unsurprising, as Leicester won 2-0 thanks to goals from Jamie Vardy and James Maddison, in a result which has helped further open up the gap from the top four to the remaining sides.
