Round-up:
The Premier League action today began with an early kick-off as Sheffield United hosted European champions and current league leaders Liverpool. Despite a rather poor performance in which they undoubtedly were not at their best, Liverpool managed to extend their 100% start to the season thanks to a 70th minute goal from Georginio Wijnaldum which was aided by a goalkeeping blunder from Sheffield United's Dean Henderson. Although they suffered a slender 1-0 defeat, it must be pointed out that Sheffield United produced a very impressive performance in which they were extremely well-organised defensively, whilst putting Liverpool under a considerable amount of pressure.
Six matches took place in the afternoon, as Chelsea bounced back from their defeat at home to the league leaders Liverpool by recording a 2-0 win at home to Brighton & Hove Albion, which, it must be noted was Chelsea's first home league win of the season. After a goalless first half, a mistake from Dan Burn in his own penalty area led to him fouling Mason Mount and thus gifting Chelsea a penalty which Jorginho calmly converted, before Willian then wrapped up the win 14 minutes from time. A notable fixture that took place today was between the sides who started the day as the bottom two, as Wolverhampton Wanderers played host to bottom side Watford, and it was the hosts who triumphed in a deserved 2-0 victory thanks to Matt Doherty's 18th minute goal followed by an own goal from Daryl Janmaat. Despite playing a large part of the match with 10 men, Tottenham Hotspur recorded a somewhat unconvincing 2-1 win over Southampton. Tottenham took the lead in the 24th minute thanks to a goal from summer signing Tanguy Ndombele, before they went down to 10 men as Serge Aurier was shown his second yellow card in the 32nd minute after an inexplicable and extremely senseless foul on Ryan Bertrand. If going down to 10 men was not bad enough for Tottenham, they then relinquished their lead after an inexplicable error from goalkeeper Hugo Lloris as he lost the ball inside his own six yard area which enabled Danny Ings to equalise. However, Southampton were only level for around 5 minutes as Harry Kane put Tottenham back in front just before half-time, and despite pressure from Southampton to equalise, Tottenham successfully held on to claim the victory. Another London side who recorded a victory today were Crystal Palace, as they won 2-0 at home to Norwich City thanks to a Luka Milivojevic penalty after a foul by Ibrahim Amadou, before Andros Townsend wrapped up the win for the hosts in the 92nd minute. In a clash between two early high flying sides, AFC Bournemouth and West Ham United played out an entertaining 2-2 draw. Andriy Yarmolenko put West Ham in front after just 10 minutes, though their lead lasted just 7 minutes as Joshua King equalised for AFC Bournemouth. After the two sides went into half-time level, AFC Bournemouth went in front after just 27 seconds of the second half thanks to Callum Wilson, and they then had the ball in the net again through Nathan Aké, however, the goal was disallowed as it took a touch of Dominic Solanke who was in an offside position. Eventually West Ham managed to haul themselves back level thanks to Aaron Cresswell's second goal in as many matches, and thus the two sides took a share of the spoils. Another match in which 4 goals were shared saw newly-promoted Aston Villa host Burnley. John McGinn, who has arguably been Aston Villa's best player so far this season, put the ball in the net early in the match but had his goal disallowed as team-mate Conor Hourihane was offside in the build-up, before they did then take the lead thanks to Anwar El-Ghazi's second league goal of the season. During half-time Burnley manager Sean Dyche made a tactical change and introduced Jay Rodriguez, and this had the desired effect as he equalised in the 68th minute. McGinn had the ball in the net for a second time, though this time it counted as he scored in the 79th minute to put Aston Villa back in front, however, they were unable to hold on for the victory as Chris Wood equalised for Burnley to ensure that the two sides took a share of the spoils.
The evening kick-off saw Liverpool's Merseyside rivals Everton host reigning champions Manchester City. Early in the match Everton's Theo Walcott suffered concussion very early on after taking a hit to his head which meant he was substituted off after only around 5 minutes of the match. Gabriel Jesus then struck for the reigning champions in the 22nd minute to give them the lead, before that was cancelled out just 11 minutes thanks to a goal on the line from Dominic Calvert-Lewin. In what was a tight and tense match, Manchester City then went back in front thanks to a free kick which Riyad Mahrez placed precisely into the bottom corner, although it is fair to argue that Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford could and possibly should have done better. The win was then wrapped up six minutes from time thanks to England international Raheem Sterling's goal which went in off the post and was awarded thanks to the goal-line technology.
