Round-up: The Premier League's weekend action began with an early kick-off in the North East, as Newcastle United hosted reigning champions Manchester City. Manchester City took the lead in the 22nd minute thanks to a goal from Raheem Sterling, however, that was cancelled out only 3 minutes later thanks to a Jetro Willems strike. Manchester City, evidently, were struggling to break down their well-organised hosts, and it took a strike of pure quality from Kevin de Bruyne to put Manchester City back in front in the 82nd minute. However, Manchester City were unable to hold on for the victory as Jonjo Shelvey equalised again for Newcastle in the 88th minute thanks to a brilliantly struck shot, in a result which could spell the end of Manchester City's reign as Premier League champions come May. To further add to Manchester City's problems, Liverpool strengthened their prospects of winning their first league title since 1990, as two goals from star defender Virgil van Dijk gave them a 2-1 win at home to Brighton & Hove Albion, despite losing goalkeeper Alisson who was sent off for a handball outside the penalty area. In the end, Lewis Dunk's goal which halved the deficit for Brighton was to prove irrelevant, as Liverpool recorded their 13th league win in 14 league games this season. A consolation for champions Manchester City, if any, came down in London, as Chelsea suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to West Ham United thanks to a 48th minute goal from Aaron Cresswell which gave the away side their first win since September 22nd. One can definitely argue that José Mourinho's appointment as manager has given Tottenham Hotspur a lift, as they recorded their second successive league win, and third win out of three in all competitions since Mourinho took charge, as they recorded a 3-2 win at home to an out-of-form AFC Bournemouth side. A brace from Dele Alli followed by a goal from Moussa Sissoko enabled Tottenham to race into a 3-0 lead, before AFC Bournemouth winger Harry Wilson, on loan from Liverpool, bagged a brace to make it somewhat uncomfortable for Tottenham, however the hosts held on for a precious victory. Crystal Palace ended a run of five consecutive league matches without victory, as they recorded a 2-0 win away to Burnley thanks to goals either side of half-time from Wilfried Zaha and Jeffrey Schlupp.

The action today concluded with a massive clash down at the bottom, as second-bottom Southampton hosted Watford who currently lie bottom of the table. In the first half, Watford were the better team and they took the lead thanks to a 24th minute goal from Ismaila Sarr. However, in the second half, aided by some tactical changes from manager Ralph Hasenhüttl, Southampton produced a considerably improved performance and in the end came from behind to record victory thanks to a Danny Ings goal which was followed up by a fantastic free-kick from midfielder James Ward-Prowse seven minutes from time.
