Round-up: The Premier League action on Boxing Day began with a clash down in North London, as Tottenham Hotspur, who were looking to bounce back from their disappointing defeat at home to Chelsea last Sunday, hosted Brighton & Hove Albion. Despite having a goal from Harry Kane disallowed for offside, it is fair to say that Tottenham winning did not look particularly likely in the first half, and in fact it was Brighton who took the lead thanks to a brilliant header from Adam Webster. In the second half, however, Tottenham produced a considerably improved performance and equalised in the 53rd minute thanks to Harry Kane, before they scored the winner in the 72nd minute thanks to Dele Alli after some brilliant build-up play from substitute Christian Eriksen.

The surprise result of the afternoon kick-offs undoubtedly came in West London, as Southampton recorded a second successive away win, this time against Chelsea, thanks to goals from Michael Obafemi and Nathan Redmond which helped secure a 2-0 triumph for the Saints. Mikel Arteta's first game as Arsenal manager saw the Gunners come from behind away at AFC Bournemouth to earn a point. Dan Gosling gave the home side in the 35th minute, before Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang equalised in the 63rd minute for Arsenal to ensure both sides took a share of the spoils. Aston Villa arrested a run of four consecutive defeats with a crucial 1-0 win at home to relegation rivals Norwich City thanks to a Conor Hourihane goal. Watford moved off the bottom at Norwich's expense, as they recorded a 1-1 draw away to Sheffield United, after an Oli Norwood penalty cancelled out Gerard Deulofeu's 27th minute goal which had put the away side in front. Everton began life under Carlo Ancelotti in ideal fashion, as they recorded a 1-0 win at home to Burnley thanks to a Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal 10 minutes from time. Another match which saw a late winner came in a London derby between Crystal Palace and West Ham United. Robert Snodgrass gave West Ham the lead in the 57th minute, before that was cancelled out only 11 minutes later thanks to a Cheikhou Kouyate goal. Just as it seemed the sides would have to settle for a point, Jordan Ayew then scored a sensational 90th minute goal to give the hosts all 3 points.

The evening action saw Manchester United host Newcastle United at the Theatre of Dreams. After a disappointing 20 minutes for the hosts, in which they fell behind thanks to a 17th minute goal from Matty Longstaff, Manchester United produced a dominant display (one which was, in fairness, aided by some sloppy errors from the Magpies) to record a 4-1 triumph thanks to an Anthony Martial brace, coupled by goals from Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

The action on Boxing Day concluded with a clash between the top 2, as Leicester City hosted Liverpool. In the end, Liverpool clearly demonstrated why they are set to win the title this season as they recorded a 4-0 win thanks to a Roberto Firmino brace, a James Milner penalty and a brilliant finish from Trent Alexander-Arnold to cap off a dominant performance from the Merseyside club, who have not lost any of their last 35 league games stretching back to last season. The action came to a conclusion with a Friday night fixture, as Wolverhampton Wanderers hosted reigning champions Manchester City in what turned out to be an extremely entertaining match. Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson was sent off in only the 12th minute after he was deemed to have fouled Diogo Jota. However, it was Manchester City who took the lead - and this was not without controversy, either - the VAR awarded them a penalty after Riyad Mahrez was allegedly brought down in the box. Raheem Sterling saw his penalty saved, however, the VAR ordered a retake due to encroachment by Wolves defender Conor Coady. Sterling saw his second penalty saved as well by Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio, however, Sterling converted from the rebound to give Manchester City the lead. The champions then doubled the lead 5 minutes into the second half thanks to Sterling's second goal of the game, before Wolves halved the deficit only 5 minutes later thanks to an Adama Traoré goal. Wolves, who had a man advantage, were piling the pressure on Manchester City, and they got their reward 8 minutes from time as Raul Jimenez equalised, before Matt Doherty bagged his third league goal of the season in the 89th minute to give the hosts all 3 points and a second successive league victory.
